Themes

Themes:

I believe there are two important themes if the book:

The first theme is stand up for yourself. Paul Sheldon stood up for himself to get rid of Annie. It is important for all people to stand up for themselves cause by not standing up for yourself, you let other people to use you and have a control on yourself. In the book, Paul Sheldon scared to resist against Annie so, he did what Annie said to him. But to the ending, we read that he had a plan against Annie.

The other theme is fame. This book shows us the other face of being famous. The books show us being famous is not always end up in a good way. Also, fame can coast a person's death. In the book, Paul Sheldon was kidnapped because Annie was obsessed with him and probably she would have killed him if he did not killed her.

Character Analysis:

Annie Wilkes:

Annie Wilkes was born in Bakersfield, California and was graduated from a nursing school in 1966. While she was the head nurse in Colorado, several infants in her care died mysteriously. And because of these deaths, the name "The Dragon Lady" stuck to her. We can say that she was psychopath cause she also killed her husband, her childhood neighbors, her father, her collage roommate and a hitchhiker she once slept with. Also, she was Paul's number one fan. She was too obsessed with him that she did not let Paul to left the house.
Her personality characterized by violent mood swings. For a moment, she was so happy, laughing and smiling, but in a minute, she can change in to a evil person. She once said that she has a bipolar disorder.
(Bipolar disorder: a mental condition marked by alternating periods of elation and depression.)

Paul Sheldon:

He is a world-famous writer. He is 42 years old and have blonde hair and blue eyes. He is very successful in his career. He married twice and both of them end up with divorce. Paul Sheldon was mostly famous for the book series called Misery.
He had an accident near to Annie's house and was carried to her house. He was forced to wrote a new novel for Annie because she did not like the ending.

Setting of the Misery

Setting Analysis:

It was stormy and snowy when Paul Sheldon crashed his car and Annie found him on the ground. And the year is 1987, January. So it was normal that there were storms and snow. The story takes place in near Sidewinder, Colorado. Paul Sheldon stayed there for months. It was summer after he was rescued from there. He stayed there for like 7 or 9 weeks.

The house that they lived for 7 or 9 week is covered with mountains and trees and there was a narrow road. No one could ever see the house and the place where it located is very difficult to find it. People nearly goes around or passed away from there. Because the house is very far away from Colorado.

In page 2, it shows us when and where these things happened. It is also show us how was the weather when Paul Sheldon crashed his car. In the second paragraph of that page, we understand how the accident happened. After the second paragraph and the first paragraph, we understand the story takes place in Colorado, and it was winter.

In page 16, the 5th and 6th lines shows us that it was still winter, there was still snows on the ground and it shows us where the farm located. Like narrow road and tree-covered mountains.

In page 58, the beginning of the 18th chapter, it reads "Some weeks later, on the first day of summer." this show us that he was Annie's prisoner for 6 months. And i think he was her prisoner for several weeks. After these weeks, the polices rescued him from Annie.
